Fallout 3

I finally bought Fallout 3 over Steam earlier this week and so far I'm enjoying it! I was a huge fan of the first and second releases. Some of the best endings in RPG history. I loved the way the narrator took you on a journey back through all the communities I visited and told me how my actions affected the world.

Bethesda games, makes of the Elder Scrolls series, made this third installment in the series. It plays more like Halflife 3 without the focus on physics. So far I find the move from isometric turn-based combat to something that more resembles a first-person shooter a boon to the sense of immersion. The inclusion of the VATS system is well done.

Character creation was my favorite part. (MINOR SPOILERS) After starting a new game, you are "born" and pick your gender, name and future appearance. From there you "grow up" through a quick series of scenes. You learn to move as a baby taking your first steps and choose your abilities using a childs book. The parallel of learning to play the game while growing up was really well done, and creates a great emotional connection to your Vault home.

The biggest down-side I've seen is the constant crashing to the desktop. Apprently a number of people are having issues on the PC side. I've made it around this by playing in windowed mode at full screen size. Somewhat annoying, but I can actually play the game. I've seen a lot of people complaining about this in forums, but I also know that my friend has the game and has had no issues. I'm hoping this gets fixed in a patch soon.

Overall, the mood is wonderful and really takes me back. The interactions with people seem pretty good. I'm hoping that the sense of options and scope carry over from the old games. So far I've made it out of the Vault, wandered the Wasteland for a while, and foundt the first big town. Here's hoping it holds up to my expectations.

I am on my second run of FO3. The first run was really by the book so to speak. I went from quest to quest in order. This time I am exploring every spot my character can get to. ((a tip)) Wait until your a much higher level to do this....

I am finding the world, exploration, and atmosphere to be fantastic. The attention to details are truly amazing.

The crashing you say? Well it has happened. Save often! I have read some players saying the game crashes every time they load it. or every time they transition in and out of areas etc... Mine have been random. I can go hours with out a crash, or get one loading the screen up. It seems to have no method to it's madness.

My cons ((Other than crashing)) Is the solitude. I feel that interaction is quite lacking. This is possibly the loneliest character I've ever played. It is almost sad.

Another would be the base story itself. I get all the freedom to explore, doing other things etc. However, I feel the main story is to sparse as a whole.

Overall, I must be enjoying it quite a bit. I am playing a second run after all :)

Hope you have a great time Vendalus!!

Yeah, I think I've started to see that. Wondering around the Wasteland I'll come upon a scavenger and my only dialog options are to trade and repair. You'd think they had problems, hopes, fears, etc.

Also, when I just ran into three super mutants looking to kill everything in their path one building over, how is this vendor just chilling on the side of the river able to survive? But that's probably a minor inconsistency, and I can see how they need to be there. I'm always glad to dump off a few pounds of stuff for some bottle caps.
